“I didn’t get the physics of setting a guy up, going with speed two plays in a row and then going with power. “As a young player, I would just run up to the offensive lineman and wiggle and pick a side and either go inside or outside,” Jones said. Studying the game still leads to new roads to the quarterback in Year 11. “It’s incredible how much this game opens up for you if you put the time in.” Guys can never get a bead on you and catch up to you if you’re always bettering yourself. Even the year when I had 19 sacks (in 2019), I was always trying to tweak things to better myself. “It should be like that in every aspect of your life, and I am never satisfied with my craft. “I am a player that is never satisfied with my craft,” Jones said. Jones does that, and says his love for the game makes it easier to push himself. There is no reason to have a 7-foot-1 wingspan and not reach for greatness. He is one of the great finishers of all time.” And then when the game starts, he doesn’t miss. ‘Stand here, coach! If I do this, you do this, and then I will do this.’ He takes nothing for granted and leaves no stone unturned. “Chan’s the kind of guy that will be heading to practice and saying, ‘All right, coach, I am going to do this and then this and then this.’ He’s always talking about it. I have admired his work ethic and really enjoyed being around someone who loves football as much as I do. “It’s just a love of the game, and to be around someone like Maxx Crosby, it’s insane. There is no magic pill that you can take. “He is a premier example of a football player, and that’s something that you can’t coach. “It’s funny with the different levels we are as far as experience - I am going into my 11th year and he is a very young player - but just the way that he works,” Jones said. The young pass rusher was Jones’ favorite player to watch on film and “now we’re here and he’s pushing me,” Jones said. If Jones was happy to see Graham, McDaniels, Ziegler and the other Patriots assistants that followed them, he was thrilled to team up with Crosby. “He taught me things off the field, about how to be a man. “When I got into the league as a rookie, he didn’t just teach me how you get to the quarterback or how you set an edge,” Jones said after he signed. Jones said the Raiders facility felt like home the first time he walked in, and he had a big hug waiting for Graham. I know he’s into his 30s, but I see Chandler as a guy that is still playing at a really high level and he’s playing at that level on all three downs, which I love.” “He’s got long arms and he’s hard to get a big hit on, which I like because the more contact you get on some of those guys, the more physical toll it takes on their body. “He’s a very slick guy in terms of using his frame,” McDaniels said. McDaniels said there is a lot of tread left on those 32-year-old tires. The three-year, $51 million contract (with $32 million guaranteed) didn’t hurt, either. A chance to reunite with Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, his position coach when he entered the league with New England, as well as new Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler, as well as to play opposite Crosby on the defensive line, was too good to pass up. Watt, who has 15.Īfter four seasons with the Patriots and six with the Cardinals, Jones got to enjoy free agency for the first time this spring. Jones is the only player in the last 20 years to have two games with four sacks and two forced fumbles, and his 14 forced fumbles in the last three seasons are the second-most in the league to Pittsburgh’s T.J.
